MINNESOTA

School Law Associate Attorney, Kennedy & Graven, Minnesota

About Our Firm: Kennedy & Graven, Chartered is a law firm of more than 30 attorneys dedicated to representing public sector clients throughout Minnesota. Our attorneys are well known for their extensive experience in providing legal services to municipalities, school districts, counties, townships, state agencies, and development authorities.

Position Description: The firm is seeking an attorney to join its School Law Practice Group. This position focuses on representing public school districts in a diverse array of legal matters unique to school districts, including data privacy issues, antidiscrimination laws, labor and employment matters, civil litigation, and special education. Key responsibilities in this position will be in civil litigation and special education, including analyzing and investigating litigation matters; conducting research and developing arguments; assisting in all phases of litigation, including motion practice, written discovery, depositions, administrative hearings or trials, brief writing, and other associate attorney-level duties.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will meet the following minimum requirements:

  • License to practice law in Minnesota
  • Zero to three years of experience practicing law
  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • The ability to manage multiple deadlines and tasks

The following qualifications, though not required, are strongly preferred:

  • Three or more years of experience practicing law
  • Experience in special education law
  • Experience in civil litigation
  • A judicial clerkship or externship with state or federal trial or appellate courts

Compensation: The annual salary range for this position is $103,000 to $120,000, or commensurate with experience. WASHINGTON

General Counsel, Seattle Public Schools, Seattle, Washington

The General Counsel serves as the principal legal advisor to the School Board, the Superintendent, and senior District administrators; provides expertise in specialized legal areas, including school district governance, labor and employment law, and capital projects; oversees the management of litigation and other adversary proceedings; and supervises staff within the General Counsel’s office, including attorneys, legal assistants, and public records and Risk Management staff.
 
The General Counsel is expected to exercise sound professional judgment with minimal direction from the Superintendent and School Board, based upon experience and practice as a lawyer or in a government position. Learn more.
