Youth violence is a significant public health problem that affects thousands of young people each day. These events can have lasting effects on the physical, mental, and social health of children and young adults, as well as impact families, schools, and the broader community.

Members of the K-12 academic community can help prevent acts of violence in schools through a comprehensive approach and strategies that simultaneously target multiple risk and protective factors. These strategies include fostering a positive school climate, ensuring access to mental health support, addressing bullying and cyberbullying, and implementing physical safety and security measures at schools, among others.

To assist K-12 schools and districts with youth violence prevention efforts, the SchoolSafety.gov team developed the attached two-page infographic, which illustrates the issue of youth violence, strategies to address it, and a sampling of related resources, programs, and tools available through the Federal School Safety Clearinghouse. We encourage you to reference and share the infographic with others in the K-12 community as you see fit.

You can find additional youth violence prevention information on SchoolSafety.gov, as well as by following the Clearinghouse on Twitter at @SchoolSafetyGov, where we will be spotlighting these resources and strategies throughout the month of April.
