2022 State of Mental Health in America Report

For the eighth year in a row, Mental Health America released its annual State of Mental Health in America report, which ranks all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on 15 mental health access and prevalence measures. In releasing this report, MHA aims to provide a snapshot of mental health status among youth and adults for policy and program planning, analysis, and evaluation; to track changes in the prevalence of mental health issues and access to mental health care; to understand how changes in national data reflect the impact of legislation and policies; and to increase the dialogues and improve outcomes for individuals and families with mental health needs.

      • Use this report to learn more about where your state ranks and let the data guide your advocacy efforts.

Addressing the Youth Mental Health Crisis: The Urgent Need for More Education, Services, and Supports

In a continued effort to address the needs of youth, Mental Health America developed The Addressing the Youth Mental Health Crisis: The Urgent Need for More Education, Services, and Supports report as a call to action for policymakers, school administrators, students, and other mental health advocates to address the lack of education, supports, and services in schools, particularly in light of the current national crisis in youth mental health. In addition to outlining the need for more school-based mental health policies, the report also analyzes states that have had success implementing such policies and calls on the federal government to learn from state successes.

      • The report is particularly useful for students and advocates that are interested in pushing for more mental health education in their local areas by offering a tool that identifies the current mental health education legislation in each state and outlines key lessons from The Mental Health Association in New York State, Inc. (MHANYS), an affiliate of Mental Health America that helped to pass the first law in the nation requiring schools to teach students about mental health.
