How to use videoconferencing tools and online platforms safely
Implementing safe practices for videoconferencing and other online platforms is key for keeping students safe online as school districts continue to conduct virtual learning. As part of the 2021 "Virtual School" Cybersecurity Campaign, the School Safety program has outlined key behaviors to implement safe practices while videoconferencing and using online platforms.
How to Safely Use Videoconferencing Tools: Schools and school districts must balance the convenience, usability, speed, and stability of online platforms with increasing risks to both school IT networks and individual users.
Follow these tips to keep your students safe:
- Only use school/district-approved tools.
- Secure your meeting for attendees.
- Only share data necessary to accomplish your meeting's goals, consistent with privacy and legal guidance from your school or district.
- Take precautions to avoid unintentionally revealing information and to ensure your home network is secure.
