Teaching Accurate and Comprehensive Black History in America’s K12 Schools

When:  Mar 14, 2018 from 03:00:00 PM to 04:00:00 PM (ET)
Sponsored by the National Black Council for School Board Members

In our K-12 classrooms, Black history lessons often skim the surface of the realities of the Black experience throughout the life of our country and the contributions that Black Americans have made. Black history is often hard to discuss, making teachers and administrators uncomfortable, but the erasure of these truths prevents Black students from understanding the role that their ancestors played in the creation, development, and success of America. Join Dr. Hasan Kwame Jeffries, Associate Professor of History at the Ohio State University and host of the Teaching Hard History: American Slavery podcast (a production of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance project), as we analyze why Black history is not taught accurately and comprehensively in K-12 classrooms, the impact on students, and what school board members can do.
