More than 4,000 employees, parents, students and community members expressed their preference for Calendar A or Calendar B in the recent online poll for the 2015 calendar year. Recommend Approval of Construction Contract for Vance High School

The school board met on Jan. 8, 2013 to recommend the approval of a construction contract for Vance High School. For more details, read the full agenda.

Main Points

The general construction contract for Vance High School was publicly bid on Dec. 20, 2012. Staff recommends the approval of the general construction contract to the lowest responsive bidder, Matthews Construction Company, in the amount of $6,720,725. The contract will provide the construction of a multi-story, 25 classroom building addition, including site work, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, cabling for voice, video, data, and all other systems related to the construction of new classrooms. Additionally, the contract includes alternates 1 and 2 to furnish and install improvements to the existing track and installation of corridor lockers. The project is scheduled for completion in January 2014.

Minority, Women, and Small Business Enterprise (M/W/SBE) participation for this construction contract is 26.88%.

Recommend Approval of the 2016 Plan for Gifted Education

Main Points

The board will be asked to approve the adoption of 2016 Plan for Gifted Education. North Carolina legislation for gifted students is dictated by Article 9B. According to this legislation, every LEA must develop a plan of action for the education of our gifted students. This plan is reviewed by the state every three years and requires approval by our local Board of Education. This plan summarizes the identification, professional development, evaluation, and comprehensive programming of gifted education in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). Report on the Quality-of-Life Study Dashboard

The school board met on Jan. 8, 2013 to report on the quality-of-life study dashboard, which was established in 1993, as a tool to evaluate social, crime, physical, and economic conditions in all of Charlotte’s neighborhoods. The school board also uses this dashboard to evaluate above conditions to make informed decisions. For more details, read the full agenda.

Main Points

Report will be presented on Quality of Life Study Dashboard. The dashboard helps to assess the health of neighborhoods in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County by calculating density and other per-capita data. This data can help the city, county, and towns, as well as other service providers, know where infrastructure and other services may be needed. The proposed project will provide an array of supports to increase student achievement at Druid Hills Academy, Walter G. Byers School, and Hawthorne High School over a three-year term. These schools are designated by the State as Title I ESEA Priority Schools. As such, these are schools that have been identified as among the lowest performing schools in the state. The goal of this initiative is to increase students’ reading proficiency and growth and promote students’ 21st Century skills through the use of iPad technology and interactive applications. Teachers will design learning centers using the iPads to meet individual student needs with flexible learning paths including multi-media learning avenues; digital tools for finding, understanding, and using information; and digital tools for supporting writing. Breakfast will be made available to all students at no charge. Studies show that students who eat school breakfast have an increase in math and reading scores, as well as improvement in speed and memory in cognitive test.
